Invisalign

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a modern system for orthodontics, the process of straightening your teeth. While traditional braces were once the only option to achieve perfect alignment, Invisalign offers an alternative with fewer complications. The system consists of customized clear plastic aligner devices worn over your teeth for most of the day and while you sleep.

At the beginning of the Invisalign process, Dr. Bashawaty will take digital impressions of your teeth in their current state of misalignment. He uses the impressions to make a digital treatment plan showing all the steps of their movement into a straighter position. You then will receive a customized system of plastic aligners. Each aligner in the series gently pushes your teeth a little further toward their new, straight position. You must wear your aligners for 20-22 hours each day and progress to the next aligner every 1-2 weeks, as dictated by Dr. Bashawaty.

How long does my Invisalign treatment take?

Just like with braces, the length of your Invisalign treatment depends on the position of your teeth when at the start of treatment. After evaluating your digital impressions and mapping out a treatment plan, Dr. Bashawaty will be able to tell you how long the treatment will last, and the numbers of aligners needed.

Generally, treatment with Invisalign takes between 12 and 18 months, but you’ll start seeing improvements in the way your teeth look just weeks into treatment!

How do I care for my Invisalign devices?

Invisalign aligners must be kept clean throughout treatment to prevent any oral health complications. Dr. Bashawaty may give you a specialized Invisalign cleaning kit, but they can be cleaned easily with a toothbrush and toothpaste. For an optimal clean, you must:

- Brush your aligners after every snack and meal

- Brush gently

- Clean your teeth while the aligner is out

- Use lukewarm water

- Avoid using hot water

- Only drink water while wearing aligners

- Remove the aligners while eating

If an aligner is broken or lost, please call South Coast Dental right away. Dr. Bashawaty may allow you to progress to the next aligner, or to continue wearing a previous set while a replacement is ordered.
